French authorities will start intercepting migrant vessels in English Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to begin stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the UK.
This policy shift follows the British leader sent a letter to the President asking him to back the plan and saying there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative confirmation.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both personnel and individuals.
"It is crucial that we deploy these methods this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson states personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.
Significantly, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had previously been suggested as a potential method to disable the engines of the boats.
The decision to take action at all is a significant advancement, coming after a short-lived shift towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which ceased when the former government official left government.
That was highlighted in July, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and President, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Now French authorities will again be permitted to stop boats before they pick up asylum-seeking individuals from the coastal areas of France's north coast, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking ways to adapt to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
